HAL-loween cake

I hope everyone had a happy Halloween! Just thought I’d share my latest cake creation, a gory tribute to one of my favorite TV vamps, Hal from the UK’s Being Human. The idea behind this cake is that even he loses control and becomes a killing machine, Hal still takes the time to be “organized” and separate his victims’ parts to keep as souvenirs.

Since I’ve been busy baking cookie favors for my sister’s wedding (more on that later!) I chose to make this a display, or a “dummy” cake made with a Styrofoam block in place of the butter cake I would have normally used for a sheet cake. All the decorations are real fondant, however, and pretty much everything except the Styrofoam is edible.

I used a pizza cutter and leaf veining tool to give the fondant a wood grain appearance, then painted it with thinned out brown food coloring gel. The eyes were also painted by hand with food coloring gel, and the fake blood was made with corn syrup, red liquid food coloring, and a tiny drop of violet food coloring gel.

The teeth were white fondant tinted with a hint of ivory food coloring, and then dry-brushed with red food coloring gel. Marzipan would have also been a good choice for the teeth since it’s already got that ivory color.

Here are some closeups of some of the details:

The teeth were my favorite part of the cake. They looked so gross!
